Quick Answers for Architects and Builders

When should we bring 101 Mobility into a project?

As early as schematic design. Elevators and lifts set requirements for pits, overhead clearance, power, and floor openings, and those are far easier to draw in than to add once framing is up. We also work on renovations already underway.

Does a home elevator need a pit, shaft way, 240 power, or a machine room?

It depends on the model. Traditional shafted elevators all need a pit with depth varying from 8” to 17”. The Vuelift comes with its own factory-built hoistway, so there is no shaft to construct and can be installed with or without a pit. A machine room is only needed when you have a hydraulic elevator for the pump. A through-floor lift, Telecab or Luma does not need a shaftway or pit. Traditional Shafted and Vuelift do require 240V power. All others require 120v power. We will confirm the pit, overhead, and power requirements for the model you choose before your drawings are final.

Can an elevator be added to an existing home?

Where there is room, a shaftway or glass elevator can also go into a renovation although finding a location in an existing home to build a shaft way is incredibly difficult. This has created the market for Through-floor lifts that travel through a cut-out in the floor between two levels, so there is no shaft to build.

What is FlexStep, and where can it be used?

FlexStep by Liftup is a wheelchair platform lift, that converts into stairs so the lift and stairs share one footprint. It suits entries and split levels with no room for both. It is currently offered for homes, not commercial buildings.

What does a public pool need for accessibility?

Under the 2010 ADA Standards, a pool with less than 300 linear feet of wall needs at least one accessible way in, and it must be a pool lift or a sloped entry. Larger pools need two. Spas need at least one. We can help you choose a lift that meets the technical requirements.

Who handles permits and inspections?

We do. For commercial projects in Pennsylvania, the Department of Labor & Industry approves lifts before work starts and inspects them before use. In New Jersey, lifts fall under the state’s Elevator Safety Subcode. For homes, we coordinate with your local code official.
